ARTIST STATEMENT
My current use of the human face as subject
matter is a deliberate attempt to make my art, and therefore my
message, more accessible. The figures I create represent both
real and imaginary individuals, inspiration coming from people
I interact with every day: co-workers, friends, and family.
|
When working with an imaginary
subject I am usually most concerned with perfecting emotive content.
But when working from a model, someone I know, my goal is more
complex. My hope is that the finished sculpture has a certain
presence and personality that is, to me and others who know him
or her, recognizably that of the model. But I also try to depict
a certain specificality about the individual: an attitude, a belief,
a mannerism. To this end I use expression, form, and often symbolism.
